About The Flying Scotsman Custom Rods
The Flying Scotsman Custom Rods was created from a simple idea that turned into a genuine passion. What began as a one-off project to build a special rod for my son’s sixteenth birthday quickly grew into a full custom rod-building service trusted by anglers across Scotland and beyond. With a background in the trades, I built many of my own tools and approached rod building with the same level of precision, care and pride that went into my joinery work.
As I started experimenting with different cork patterns, thread colours and blank designs, people began asking for their own custom rods. Friends, fishermen and local anglers all wanted something made for their hands and their rivers. Over time, I realised that building rods was not just a hobby, it was a craft I loved. I began working directly with a factory that produces high-quality blanks for major brands, and together we spent years testing and refining IM12 nano carbon blanks until I had a full range that delivered the action, power, and feel I wanted.
Today, every rod is handmade in Broughty Ferry in Dundee using top-quality components and years of experience. I build rods for salmon, trout and sea trout in a wide variety of models, including single-hand, double-hand, switch and spinning rods. Each build can be personalised with your choice of cork, thread, reel seat, handle shape and decorative detail, giving you a rod that is completely unique to you.
Whether you are casting a light switch rod on a small river or a fourteen-foot double hander on the Tay, I aim to build rods that feel natural from the first cast and bring real enjoyment to every day on the water. These rods are crafted with passion, built to last and made with Scottish heritage at their core.
